Lamb, The

Location: 94 Lamb's Conduit Street Tube: Russell Square Popular Georgian pub on the edge of Bloomsbury complete with snob screens at the bar that allow the drinker to deprive the landlord of gossip! Of interest is the Victorian Polyphone which happily sings on insertion of an old penny.

Old Bank of England, The

Location: 194 Fleet Street Tube: Temple Perhaps the best of a recent rash of conversions which have seen former banks transformed into stunning drinking emporia. Owned by Fuller's (one of London's two large family run brewers), the ales are always second to none and the huge bar means that service is never a problem.

On & On

Location: The London Pavilion, Piccadilly Circus Tube: Piccadilly Circus A bizarre drinking emporium which I can only assume is taking itself with a rather large and ironic pinch of salt. Eight bars with themes as diverse as a gentlemen's club and a kitsch modernist lounge attract an eclectic over 25's type crowd who seem to be just as lost as the designers presumably were.

Red Lion, The

Location: 48 Parliament Street Tube: Westminster Having spent a day wandering musing at Poet's Corner or marvelling at the Palace of Westminster, this small corner pub at the start of Whitehall provides welcome relief.

Salisbury, The

Location: 90 St. Martin's Lane Tube: Leicester Square A riot of Victoriana, verging on a full scale civil war, The Salisbury has long catered for the theatre-inclined and gets packed to the rafters with theatre goers as well as actors from the nearby West End stages.

Shoeless Joe's

Location: 2 Old Change Court Tube: Blackfriars A bar/restaurant/club. This place is filled with a buzzing, vibrant crowd: not the place to go if you want a quiet night out!! It is however the place to go if you want to watch sport.

Windows Bar

Location: The London Hilton, 22 Park Lane Tube: Hyde Park Corner There are two reasons to visit the Windows Bar at the Hilton. The first is that it must have the finest view of any bar in London; The Queen famously had a small fit when she realised she'd be able to see the monstrous edifice from her garden, but by then it was too late.

Ye Grapes

Location: 16 Shepherd Market Tube: Green Park Large Victorian pub in the middle of Shepherd Market, a characterful little area off Piccadilly. An open fire in the winter provides the perfect accompaniment for a restful pint chosen from the fine selection of real ales always on offer.
